30 Day Challenge to Discover Hidden Money

What if you could find extra money every day for a month without giving up anything you love? No skipping your morning coffee. No guilt for a takeout night. Just smarter, more intentional choices that help you spot where money’s slipping through the cracks—or sitting around, waiting to be claimed.

This 30-day challenge is about discovery. Not deprivation.

You’re not going to pinch pennies. You’re going to find them.

Day 1 – Scan for Sneaky Subscriptions

Pull up your bank or credit card statement and look for anything recurring that you’ve forgotten about or no longer need. You might spot that audiobook service you stopped using months ago.

Day 2 – Cancel One Thing

Pick one subscription and cancel it today. Even if it’s just $6.99/month, that’s $84 a year you just reclaimed.

Day 3 – Share & Save

Ask a friend or family member if you can split the cost of a streaming or music service. Many platforms allow multiple users, so why not share the cost?

Day 4 – Call & Negotiate a Bill

Call your cell phone, internet, or cable provider and ask about any current promos or discounts. Most companies will give you something to keep you around.

Day 5 – Review Your Auto-Payments

Sometimes we forget what’s on auto-pay. Check and make sure everything being automatically deducted is still needed—and still the best deal.

Day 6 – Add Up Your Monthly Charges

Make a quick list of your recurring monthly charges. Seeing the total can be eye-opening. Even $10 here and there adds up fast.

Day 7 – Check for Forgotten Cash

Look through your junk drawer, wallet, or old birthday cards. Gift cards, cash, or rebate checks might be hiding in plain sight.

Day 8 – Download a Cashback App

Install one cashback app like Upside. You’ll get a small kickback on everyday purchases with almost zero effort.

Day 9 – Use the App for a Planned Purchase

Use your new cashback app today—maybe for groceries, pet supplies, or takeout. Don’t buy anything extra, just earn rewards for what you were already buying.

Day 10 – Check Your Credit Card Perks

Look up your credit card benefits. Many cards offer hidden perks—like discounts, free trials, or even cashback you haven’t redeemed yet.

Day 11 – Sign Up for Grocery Store Rewards

If you shop somewhere regularly, sign up for their rewards program. Some give instant discounts, points, or digital coupons.

Day 12 – Register for a Frequent Buyer Program

Many stores and restaurants, even smaller locally owned ones, offer loyalty programs that pay you back for everyday purchases. Join one you actually use.

Day 13 – Refer a Friend to a Favorite App

Most apps or services have a referral program. Text a link to a friend and earn a reward when they sign up.

Day 14 – Search for Unclaimed Money

Search your province/state’s unclaimed property database (just Google "[your state] unclaimed money"). People are often owed money from closed accounts, refunds, or overpaid bills.

Day 15 – Sell One Thing Today

Find one item in your home you don’t use—kitchen appliance, backpack, old electronics—and post it on Facebook Marketplace or OfferUp.

Day 16 – Repeat With Another Item

Do it again with something else. Clothes, shoes, or hobby items you no longer use are perfect candidates.

Day 17 – Organize a Swap with Friends

Text a few friends and plan a simple swap: books, home goods, clothes, tools, toys. You get something “new” without spending a dime and declutter at the same time.

Day 18 – Sell Old Tech for Cash

Use a site like Decluttr or EcoATM to sell an old phone, tablet, or game console. Even outdated models can bring in a little cash.

Day 19 – Offer One Quick Service

Offer a one-time gig to a friend—maybe pet sitting, helping with a resume, or tutoring. You’d be surprised what someone will happily pay for.

Day 20 – Post a Free Item for Pickup

If something’s not worth selling, post it for free pickup online (look for a local BuyNothing.org group!). Clear your space and rack up some good financial karma.

Day 21 – Set Up Auto-Transfer to Savings

Set up a daily or weekly automatic transfer—even $2/day—to a savings account. That’s painless and adds up over time.

Day 22 – Track One Impulse Buy Category

Choose one thing you often overspend on (snacks, late-night online orders?) and track it this week. Awareness = control.

Day 23 – Use Only Cash Today

Withdraw a small amount of cash and use that for the day. It helps you actually feel your spending.

Day 24 – Switch One Habit for a Cheaper Option

Swap your daily soda for water, or your $6 latte for a homemade coffee. No cold turkey—just one tweak today.

Day 25 – Check a Recent Grocery Receipt

Look for repeat purchases you don’t actually need or use up. Can you buy smaller quantities or skip one next trip?

Day 26 – Use a Gas App Before You Fill Up

Apps like GasBuddy help you find the cheapest station nearby. The savings on one tank might be small, but they add up fast.

Day 27 – Set a Weekly Limit for One Spending Category

Pick a category that tends to get out of hand (like takeout) and give yourself a cap for the week. It’s not restrictive—it’s intentional.

Day 28 – Revisit Your Subscription List

Go back to Day 1’s list and see if anything else can go. Maybe you’ve lived without one service for 3 weeks and didn’t even miss it.

Day 29 – Total Your Wins

Add up how much money you’ve saved, earned, or found this month. Even small amounts show progress—and prove it’s worth the effort.

Day 30 – Pick 3 Habits to Keep

Choose three things from this challenge that felt easy and worked for you. Keep those going into next month, and you’ll keep finding money—without even trying.
