The Complete Guide to Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is a goldmine for deals. Whether you’re furnishing a home, upgrading your wardrobe, or flipping finds for profit, you can save (or make) a ton of money.

I recently moved back to the U.S. after living in Panama for four years and had to start my household from scratch. Shopping on Facebook Marketplace has saved me a wad (see my grand total below)!

But, it's more than just the savings—I am finding totally unique stuff that is giving my home so much personality! Check out some of my cool finds in the photo gallery below.

It’s not without its risks. Scammers are out there. Some deals aren’t as good as they seem. And safety should always be a priority when meeting strangers.

This guide covers everything you need to know to buy (or sell) on Facebook Marketplace with confidence.

How to Find the Best Deals on Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is flooded with listings, but not all deals are created equal. Here’s how to find the real gems:

❶ Use Smart Search Tricks

  • Search for common misspellings of the item you want. Many sellers list things incorrectly, which means less competition for you.
  • Use multiple terms (e.g., “dresser,” “chest of drawers,” “wood dresser”) to catch different listings.
  • Try filtering by “New” and “Used” to compare options.

❷ Check Listings Frequently

  • The best deals go FAST. Check Marketplace multiple times a day for new posts.
  • Turn on notifications for searches to get alerts when new listings match your keywords.

❸ Message the Seller Right Away

  • If you see a great deal, don’t wait. Send a message immediately.
  • A simple “Is this still available?” gets the conversation started.

How to Negotiate the Best Price

Many sellers expect negotiation, so don’t be shy about making an offer.

❶ Start with a Reasonable Offer

  • If an item is fairly priced, offer 10-20% less than the asking price.
  • If the item is overpriced, offer what it’s actually worth. Justify your offer by mentioning similar listings.

❷ Be Polite but Direct

  • Instead of just saying, “Will you take $XX?”
  • Say: “Would you accept $XX if I can pick it up today?”

❸ Look for Discounts on Bundles

If a seller has multiple items, ask if they’ll cut a deal for buying more than one.

❹ Cash Offers Work Best

Many sellers prefer cash and may be more willing to negotiate if you offer immediate pickup and payment.

How to Spot & Avoid Scams

Unfortunately, scammers lurk on Facebook Marketplace. Here’s how to protect yourself:

🚨 Red Flags to Watch For

  • Too good to be true? It probably is.
  • They refuse to meet in person.\
  • They ask for upfront payment (CashApp, Zelle, Venmo, gift cards, etc.).
  • They try to send you a “code” to verify your identity.
  • They ask for your phone number or personal info.
  • Their profile looks fake (new, no photos, no past activity).

🚫 How to Avoid Getting Scammed

  • Only pay in person, after seeing the item.
  • Avoid shipping transactions unless it’s through Facebook’s official checkout system.
  • Meet in a safe, public place (more on this below).
  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, walk away.

Staying Physically Safe When Meeting a Seller or Buyer

Meeting strangers comes with risks. Here are some suggested precautions:

✅ Meet in a Public Place

  • Police stations, grocery store parking lots, or inside Starbucks are great meet-up spots.
  • Many police departments have designated "Safe Exchange Zones" for buying and selling.

✅ Don’t Go Alone

  • Bring a friend if possible.
  • If you must go alone, share your location with someone and check in before and after the meeting.

✅ Trust Your Instincts

  • If something feels sketchy, cancel the meeting. No deal is worth your safety.
  • Never invite strangers to your home (unless you’re selling something too large to move, like furniture).

Making Payments: What’s Safe & What’s Not

Best Payment Methods

  • Cash – Always the safest, easiest option.
  • PayPal “Goods & Services* – Offers buyer protection, but only use for shipped items.
  • Facebook Checkout – If shipping through Facebook, use their built-in payment system for protection.

🚫 Avoid These Payment Methods

  • Zelle, Venmo, CashApp – No buyer protection!
  • Gift Cards – HUGE red flag!
  • Personal Checks – Can bounce or be fraudulent.

Selling on Facebook Marketplace? Here’s How to Do It Right

Selling is just as easy as buying. Here’s how to sell fast and for the best price:

❶ Take Great Photos

  • Clean the item before taking pictures.
  • Take multiple angles with good lighting.
  • Include close-ups of any imperfections (honesty builds trust).

❷ Write a Clear, Honest Description

  • Include brand, size, condition, and any flaws.
  • Use keywords people will search for.
  • Mention why you’re selling (it makes people feel more comfortable buying).

❸ Price It Right

  • Check similar listings to see what others are charging.
  • If you want quick sales, price slightly lower than the competition.

❹ Boost Visibility

  • Share your listing in local Buy & Sell groups for more exposure.
  • Relist the item every few days to keep it at the top of searches.

An Incredible Tool

Facebook Marketplace is an incredible tool for buying and selling, but you have to be smart about it.

To recap:

  • Search smart & act fast on deals
  • Negotiate politely but firmly
  • Watch out for scams & red flags
  • Stay safe when meeting strangers
  • Use secure payment methods only
