Does the Upside App Really Give You Money Back???

What Is Upside & Why Should You Care?

Ever check your bank account after filling up your gas tank and wince? Or wonder if grocery shopping should really cost this much? The Upside app aims to put some of that cash back in your pocket.

Upside is a FREE cash back app that rewards you for everyday purchases at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants. Unlike complicated loyalty programs, Upside works with places you already shop.

But does it actually save you money? Let's break it down.

How the Upside App Works (In Plain English)

The process is refreshingly simple:

  1. Download the Upside app (available on iOS and Android)
  2. Browse local offers at gas stations, grocery stores, and restaurants
  3. Claim an offer before you shop
  4. Pay as normal with any credit or debit card
  5. Take a photo of your receipt
  6. Get cash back deposited to your account

Your earnings accumulate in the app until you decide to cash out. You can transfer money to your bank account, PayPal, or convert to gift cards.

The Good Stuff: Upside Advantages

❶ Real Cash Back on Essentials

The biggest win? Upside focuses on necessities. You're going to buy gas and groceries anyway. Why not get some money back?

Gas offers typically range from 5¢ to 25¢ per gallon. After using it twice when I was buying gas, my savings totaled $6.52 just on gas.

❷ Stacks With Other Rewards

Use your rewards credit card AND get Upside cash back. The app doesn't interfere with other loyalty programs or credit card rewards. Double-dipping is encouraged!

❸ Wide Availability

Upside works with major chains like Shell, BP, Exxon, Chevron, and many local stations. Their grocery and restaurant coverage keeps expanding too.

❹ User-Friendly Interface

The map feature shows nearby offers clearly. No hunting through complicated menus or decoding fine print. You can even filter by highest cash back percentage.

❺ Quick Processing

Most receipt approvals happen within 24 hours. Cash hits your account fast, unlike some rewards programs that make you wait weeks.

The Not-So-Good: Upside's Limitations

❶ Receipt Requirement

The need to upload receipts can be annoying. If you forget to snap a photo or lose your receipt, no cash back for you.

❷ Location Limitations

While coverage is growing, rural areas have fewer participating businesses. City dwellers definitely see more benefits.

❸ Minimum Withdrawal Thresholds

You'll need to accumulate $10 before cashing out to your bank account. For PayPal transfers, it's $15 (or $1 with a $0.30 fee).

❹ Changing Offers

That amazing 25¢/gallon deal might disappear tomorrow. Offers change frequently, which makes long-term savings unpredictable.

Privacy & Security: Should You Worry?

Upside collects data about your shopping habits. This shouldn't surprise anyone—it's how they create targeted offers.

The app requires:

  • Location access
  • Camera permissions (for receipts)
  • Purchase information

According to their privacy policy, they share anonymized data with merchants and partners. They do NOT sell your personal information to third parties.

Security-wise, Upside uses encryption for data transmission and doesn't store your credit card details. The app never requires access to your banking information beyond what's needed for transferring your earnings.

My take? Their data practices align with industry standards. If you use other rewards apps, Upside presents similar privacy considerations.

Pro Tips to Maximize Your Upside Savings

❶ Check the App Before Filling Up

Gas prices can vary wildly between stations. Upside sometimes offers better cash back at stations charging slightly more. Always do quick math to ensure you're getting the best deal.

❷ Combine With Price Comparison

Use GasBuddy or similar apps to find the lowest base price, then check if Upside offers cash back there.

Recently, I went to the closest station by me and I ended up paying paying more for my gas than if I would have gone to a station with better public prices, even considering the cash back. No bueno!

❸ Refer Friends

The referral program gives you a percentage of your friends' cash back for their first year, so you can earn extra cash back!

❹ Strategic Claiming

Only claim offers you'll definitely use. Claiming too many without redeeming them may reduce future offers.

❺ Save Receipts Immediately

Take photos of receipts right after purchase. Store lighting is usually better than home lighting for readable images.

❻ Check Restaurant Specials

Restaurant offers often reach 35% cash back, but may apply only to specific days or times. Plan accordingly.

Is Upside Worth Your Time?

Have you calculated how much you spend yearly on gas and groceries? For the average American, it's thousands of dollars.

Even a modest 5% back translates to real money!

The real question: Is the small effort of claiming offers and scanning receipts worth your savings? For most people (like me!), the answer is YES.

What could you do with your Upside savings? Start a vacation fund? Pay down debt? Or simply reduce the sting of inflation?

Upside won't make you rich, but it rewards you for purchases you're already making. In today's economy, every dollar counts.
